TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES THROUGH DIVERSITY.
Greetings!
In a recent collaboration, my colleagues and I contributed to a study featured in the American Journal of Public Health, shedding light on the concerning practice of conversion therapy among transgender and non-binary (TNB) youth.
What is conversion therapy?
Conversion therapy, also known as Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts (SOGEI Change Efforts), refers to practices that attempt to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Major medical and mental health organizations have widely discredited these practices, and can have serious negative consequences for LGBTQ+ youth, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Our study found that TNB youth of color are “disproportionately” impacted by conversion therapy. Our LGBTQ+ youth, especially those who are already facing marginalization due to their race or ethnicity, deserve our love, support, and protection.
Here’s what you can do to help:
- Educate yourself about the dangers of conversion therapy.
- Support organizations working to end conversion therapy.
- Advocate for policies that ban conversion therapy.
- Let LGBTQ+ youth know you see them and support their identities.
Together, we can create a world where all youth feel safe and supported to be who they are.
By working together, we can make a difference!
With gratitude and light,
Shalonda Ingram
